I drive a 07 Tundra running on the stock OEM 225 70 18 Michelin LTX.
I am mostly Highway and dirt/shell roads for my driving. No serious off roading but I do need to be able to hold my own if it gets messy. I live in Extreme South Louisiana.

I have always had awesome service from my Michelin Tires on all my prior vehicles but the set from the factory is exibiting some oddities. I am losing little chunks of tire tread ranging from quarter of an inh cubes to one inch by about a quarter inch thick slabs. All only on the tread's but also on the sidewall treaded area. Any idea what might cause this?

Second, I am looking at replacing the OEM tires with either the OEM Michellins or Pirelli Scorpion str's in the same size. 255 70 18. HAve you heard good things about them? What is the strength of this tire over the Michelin? What is the weakest aspect of this tire?

Hello JD, Thanks for the post.

I looked up your truck's OEM options and I think you've got your sizes alittle confused. I think you ment to say that you have the 255/70R18 OEM michelins and you want to look into the 275/65R18 OEM size for your next tire. If this is correct, here's my response.

This is the first I have heard of the OEM Michelins chunking. I would recommend having the tires looked at. A lot of things can cause tire chunking but for me, I had a set of tires (not michelins) chunk on me after one trip on a steep gravel road. Its hard to say what could be causing it for you though. Best bet it to have them looked at. OEM rubber tends to be softer than other models of the same tire, this is because Vehicle manufactures ask for tires that are quiet. Quiet tires help sell vehicles but they don't always hold up well when you put them to work.

For you driving contitions I'd recommend taking a look at a few moderate AT tires. The Michelin LTX AT/2, the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor or the Pirelli ATR. Both the Pirelli and the Goodyear have 50,000 mile warranties and the LXT AT/2 has a slighly harder tread compound than your OE Michelin LTX A/S.

275/65R18 Tires - Call for a price and availability on the Pirelli ATR.

Let us know if we can help you more. For LA residents we are happy to mail order tires to you. We guarantee the lowest delivered price. Shipping is FREE.
